Articulation and the Myth of Difficulty

Author: Richard Wright

9 pages, 3 musical examples

Richard Wright’s article addresses basic issues of elementary teaching. It contains three new teacher-pupil duets, taken from his forthcoming tutor book, First Pieces, First Principles. His thesis is that in early learning, many technical difficulties traditionally introduced early on must make way for phrasing and articulation skills. Strategies are discussed for introducing rests, staccato, and the phrasing slur.
